Sempre me interroguei porquê algumas pessoas dormiam durante o dia e não à noite.

out of circulation

To think about the image that is in circulation is to assign the communicative character that a given environment acquires in which ideas and ideals are moving between information flows belonging to the virtual and physical world. The project that originated the series "Out of Circulation", started in 2005, correlates the work with socioeconomic aspects, for, as I associate images of precarious social reality to the support of economic value, to the ballot of a Real, my proposal causes a dissonant encounter between different symbolic elements.

I have started this project with the daily photographic record of people who sleeping on the sidewalks or urban public facilities. Of course, did not go out looking for such situations. They are casual encounters that take place as I realize that amidst so many actions present in everyday life of a city some people are disconnected, adding themselves to the noise and other manifestations inherent to the urban dynamics.

The voyeurism established during our walks in the city we inhabit or that we visit keeps, in a sense, relationships with our thought and imagination, where we look for historical or experiential relationships with some images that we visualize. However, the city expresses a dynamic where past, present and future seem to be dissolved on a mesh that is in constant change, in which we can escape into daydreams coming from our memory at odds with reality.

I have always asked myself why some people slept during the day and not at night. The answer came immediately came, as I read in a newspaper produced by the "street people", stating that such people felt safer when they slept under the "supervision" of the city that was "awake.

From the existing socioeconomic gap in greater numbers in the country, I chose the ballot of a Real, which is no longer produced since the year 2006 to serve as the basis of these images captured on the streets.

While traveling by several places in Brazil and some European countries, I observed the same situation: people in a state of sleep. I then, started to incorporate images of those people to my personal photo archive. Therefore, this file corresponds to the photographic records captured in the cities of Salvador, Porto Alegre, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Belo Horizonte, Buenos Aires, Valencia, Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, London, Berlin and Amsterdam. Regardless of the socio-cultural situation of the country of origin, such people are almost always wrapped in fabric or perishable materials such as cardboard, plastic and other materials that can protect their identity or their bodies of the attacks of time and society.

Imagining the overlays of social image on supports related to economic value, such as gold or money, makes me reflect on social and exchange values existing in our society. So, when choosing elements that are "out of circulation", I propose to discuss the social system and the practices adopted by those who study some "breakdowns" spread throughout the cities.

In preparing the series "Out of circulation", beyond the symbolic associations present in the elements that were brought into contact (ballot and photographic image) others issuesare gathered issues related to the number of accumulated and presented images linked with the unit, dozen or hundred images. Another important factor that is associated to the work is the correspondence to the scale of the same photographic images, as they meet the dimensions found in a ballot of one Real.

The scale allowed to display these images seems to reduce human value of the currency value or to override to this same image what it has of fragile and insignificant, when the power decides to eliminate its social value.
